Also, many vets have alternative formulations such as liquids or powders and many pills can be crushed and sprinkled on food. Always ask about alternatives.

I still think the easiest way to pill a cat is to not "pill" it at all Find a food your cat likes that you can hide the pill in. Butter, cream cheese, regular cheese, canned cat food, anything soft enough to hide the pill in will work.

They also sell "pill pockets" at many vets that work well, but in my experience some finicky cats won't eat them (where most dogs LOVE them! but I'll admit the dog pockets smell better )

Well said, Tim. My cat never knows beforehand that it's meds time and, by the time he does, it's almost done. Even if administering them means on time every time I make sure he's unaware I'm coming to dose him. For all he knows it's just a load of laundry in my arms, ya know

my cat is SO picky.....he's even picky with his treats! I've tried hiding it in food in the past, he'd eat everything in the dish, but the pill!!! I have no problem giving him liquid meds, but the dang pill, ugh!!!! I've resorted to crushing the pills, mixing with a tiny bit of water, and using a syringe and shooting the watery mixture down his throat
DH & I figured this was ok, because we both work in healthcare, and have seen/done that with patients....it's ok with humans as long as the medicine is not time release.
I'm getting the medicine in, giving him treats, praising him.......then he just runs and hides all day, he's SO mad at me!!!!! poor little guy, his fever keeps coming back when the meds start to wear off!

Have a great day everyone!!!!

Some meds can be made into an ointment that can be given through the skin. I don't know if there is a pharmacy in your area that can compound them or if the meds you are giving can be made into that kind of formulation ( I think it depends on the size of the molecule). We do that for our kitties-it is great but I'm sure we pay at least 3 or 4 times as much for the ointment but I think time is money (I work on an hourly basis from home so I use that excuse to justify little conveniences like that!) and the less stress the better.
