Friskies, and anything by Purina is not good.
Even Pro Plan by Purina is not good. They are filled with by-products and corn. Better dry food choices for you might be: Precise, Innova, California Natural, Felidae, or Eukanuba. They are more expensive, but well worth it.

I can't tell you what's in the Japanese brands because I don't understand what's written on the package (I can only read the basic stuff - like taurin etc), so among these brands, which is the best? |

I would go with Nutro, out of the ones you listed. If you can't find it, then get Royal Canin.

Just wanted to add that canned is actually better than dry.. so the more canned food in the diet the better
Of the ones you listed, I'd go with Nutro (especially canned... the dry is ok but there's definately better... but if its all you can find go for it).

Star, there is a link in this post that compares the ingredients in some dry foods: http://www.catforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=15101
Also, you can go tohttp://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=home-tab and in the green box on the home page, there is a button that takes you to a page where you can compare 3 food of your choice to each other to see which one has the better ingredients. This can be usefull on many different levels--availability, cost (a BIG issue), cat's preference... So, it's best to figure out what works best for you. It was good of you to ask about the wet food. There is a link at the top of the Health and Nutrition page, here, that outlines the benefits of feeding a wet diet to your cat. Many people (myself, included) feed a 50/50 diet of wet and dry if feeding wet food every meal is not possible. Again, learn as much as you can from these resources, then figure out what works best for you and your cat. Good luck to you! |

When I was purchasing dog food, the guy at the store told me that Eukanuba has really downgraded their product due to all the commercialization etc. So it's really not as good as it used to be. I havent heard of Nutro but California Natural and Innova are supposed to be really good. In the dog foods, they include very healthy ingredients including fruit and no by products. You definately wont find the really good stuff in large pet stores like Petcetera, rather you'd have to go to a smaller pet store where the staff are really knowledgeable.
Does anyone know whether Nutro, Cali Natural, or Innova help out the coat of the cats?? We're currently still on Eukanuba and we'll be switching once they finish the bag, but our cats' coats are extremely soft. So we definately dont want to lose that aspect |
