Didn't your vet give you pre-op instructions?

I know with *my* vet if an animal is getting put under I am to withhold food AND water from midnight the night before.

Absolutely not. No food after 8 PM. Leave water available, but make sure your kitten finds nothing to eat.

You should have been instructed to fast your kitten overnight before the surgery, when you made the appointment. If nobody talked to you about that, you have to wonder how safe your kitten will be in a place like that.
Not to tell you that you can't feed your kitten before surgery is inexcusable negligence. There is just no excuse for that.

i see what you mean, the receptionist probably just didn't realize the importance of the appointment, i truly trust this vet and their facility, i will discuss the matter though with the vet for future appointments, thanks.

Then the vet needs to get a new receptionist. This is a very serious omission. Now, our instructions were no food or water after midnight. Those incidentally are the same instructions we've had for many of our own tests and surgeries.

Mistakes happen sometimes. Maybe she just forgot to mention. It is our responsibility as pet owners to make sure we ask questions to- not just expect to be told.

Good thing you asked Slick.

It is good that you found out for sure.
I know at my vet clinic, it would have resulted in a cancellation of the procedure. When I drop off a pet they always ask if they've had any food or water. So, while they should definately have told you before hand, at many clinics it wouldn't have put your pet in danger since they ask you. It would have been a big inconvenience for you though!

We always advise no food after 8pm, but NEVER tell people to restrict an animals water inake. I would not leave my cat without water from midnight, considering that means it would be without any fluids for 12-18 hours!
