After work today, I stopped at a nearby vet clinic that carries the IVD diets and bought a bag of the dry IVD Rabbit and Pea and I'm really glad I did. I gave my cats a sample and they liked it. It has a nice triangular shape and texture kitties like. I'm very impressed with this food because for a prescription diet it's pretty good. In fact, this is the only prescription dry food that I know of that has no chemical preservatives, no fillers(just peas), and no by-products. It's a natural pet food available by prescription. The canned version(which I also feed) does contain rabbit by-products but that's no different than a cat consuming an entire rabbit in the wild. It's unfortunate that this food is not as readily available as the Hill's diets. I guess not enough people know about it so not enough people are demanding it. I think it's time to start demanding. People, if you have to feed your cat a prescription diet, well depending on your cat's condition, the IVD diets may be worth considering. Otherwise you may end up in a Hill's Science Diet/ Prescription Diet prison cage.
I also bought a couple cans of the Venizon and Pea, just as a treat. It's pretty yummy for my kitties too. |

Gee, you took your own advice: take charge and think for yourself.
I'll be interested to know how you (and the cats) like it long-term; you obviously gave it a lot of thought. I've heard of many people using the IVD limited protein diets for IBD cats, and they certainly seem simple in formula without a bunch of strange stuff. I'm glad you found something that you feel will work and be good for your cats. I wish they made a bland diet that would have been appropriate for Assumpta these last few weeks. I don't really feel bad about using what I feel was an appropriate (if not quite up to my personal standards) food for her temporarily, though. I'm hoping that she'll tolerate her regular food well long-term and that I won't need to do anything permanent (at least not yet). |

Of course it was my decision. I just took some of the information you offered in order to think things through to make my decision. That's what I meant.
I wish it wasn't just available by prescription. Any healthy cat can eat Rabbit and Pea or Venizon and Pea. But I guess there would be too many rabbit and deer activists. No surprise, we've got enough chicken and cow activists as well. |
