Default How to measure a cat?

I think Tommy is growing again. He had maintained a constant weight for about the last four months, but lately he's been gaining two onces a week on the same amount of food, and he just looks, well, bigger. But his body shape is still OK. It's hard to tell if he's actually growing because it's so gradual, I don't think I'd be able to tell. So, I'm wondering what's the best way to measure him, to see if he's actually getting bigger? Dimension around the chest? I think trying measure his length would be futile, because of how "stretchy" cats are. Anybody try this at home?
