Well we went to the vet today. On the phone while talking to her, she was preparing me for the possibility that sugery would probably be the best option for him, as it's worked more effectivley for her than draining with a needle. When I took him in and she LOOKED at it however, she decided to try the non surgical treatment, as the position of the hematoma is down by the base of his ear, swelling into his ear canal, and the surgery wouldn't be as simple as it normally is. So it's been drained, but I dont really know how well it's going to work. I'm to call them in the next few days if he hasn't improved. We went through several things, and couldn't figure out what he could have done to cause this. AND! When I was looking at him when I got home from work tonight, I noticed that his OTHER ear has some swelling, and there's a small fluid filled pocket as well! Is it possible that he got a hematoma in BOTH ears?!?!?! How messed up is THAT!? (Leave it to my cats to get something out of the ordinary, with no visible cause, TWICE!) I'm calling the vet as soon as they open tomorrow to ask. Buddy still seems VERY uncomfortable, and has been growling and hissing at us.

Well, his bad ear hasn't changed. It looks worse then yesterday again, so it looks like we'll be heading in for the surgery... On the up side, his other ear hasn't changed, which means it has NOT gotten any worse, and I'm hoping the vet can do something about that one easily

Went into the vet today. Took five minutes for her to say "Yup, he's worse. We'll do surgery tomorrow". She's boggled at what's caused it, and doesn't have any answers for me, which I'm not used to from her, as she's generally an excellent vet. I'm also a little annoyed that I could have called and TOLD her he was worse, and we should do surgery, instead of paying nearly $25 in cabs to get there and home, and stressing Buddy out in the process.
But, he's going in tomorrow morning. She's going to fix both ears (eventhough the other one isn't NEARLY as bad, might as well fix 'em both), and do a thorough ear exam and clean while he's under, to see if we can figure out what caused this. Please keep Buddy in your thoughts. It may not be a serious surgery, but he's being operated on all the same

Good luck, and hopefully everything turns out well. Sorry I didn't catch any earlier threads, I was dealing with Ginza's mystery illness. I'm very interested in hearing an update on the possible cause, since Ginza also has a hematoma in both ears. So far his has stayed small for the last 2 years (knock on wood it continues). We couldn't find an obvious cause, like ear infection or mites. I constantly check and massage his ears.
