For quality there's going to be a higher price than grocery store brands, that's for sure but it's relative to what you're getting for your money. Here are some brands that are comparable to Nutro.

Natural Balance is very rich so you can feed less of it and the bag will last longer.

6.6 pound bag $11.99
16.5 pound bag $27.99

Top ingredients include: Chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, duck, lamb meal, potatoes, chicken fat, canola oil, oat meal, fish meal, brewers yeast, dried skim milk, natural flavor, dried eggs

Protein 34% min
Fat 18% min
Fiber 3% max
I couldn't find the calories but it's somewhere over 500 per cup so you can feed sparingly to save money.
If that food is too rich Solid Gold Katz N Flocken is pretty affordable too.

4 pound bag $8.29
15 pound bag $24.99

Top ingredients include: Lamb, chicken meal, millet, brown rice, menhadden fish meal, cracked pearled barley, canola oil, flaxseed oil, garlic, amaranth, blueberries, dried chickory root

Protein 34% min
Fat 12% min
Fiber max 5%
Calories per cup 323

Good luck finding a quality food.

You can tell more about a food by its ingredient list than its "nutritional profile." Using both together is ideal, however there are plenty of crappy grocery store foods out there that will show adequate numbers on the profile. Does that mean its an acceptible food? Of course not! I learn ALOT more from the ingredient list. In this case, you see red flags like animal digest, brewers rice, and two entries of corn or corn fractions. Plus, being corn gluten meal is 2nd on the list, behind chicken which is likely mostly water being its not meal, the corn gluten might be the primary protien source, which isnt a good thing. Its better than alot of grocery store brands, but im just saying that the ingredient list to me is a better indicator of food quality than the "nutritional profile" is.

Natural Balance and Solid Gold are both good foods, and I would say definite upgrades over Nutro. Nutro still likes to overuse corn gluten alot in their foods. I am strongly looking at Natural Balance, but like moogie said, its so rich, the calorie content is a bit high for my liking. I already have my two cats on a 200cal/day diet since they are a bit hefty, so a high cal food means they would be getting fed VERY little food at 200 cals.

Huh. Both of these go for more than I've ever spent on cat food - just a bit more than what I pay for Nutro around here.

Amazingly enough, there are areas that charge those same kind of prices for Nutro. I view Nutro like Royal Canin. A descent mid range food, but over priced for what you get.

Nutro is not overpriced considering the constant coupons and promotions I get from them.

You can get ASPCA fliers wit $5 Nutro coupons at your local animal shelter.

Here is a coupon for a FREE bag of Nutro Natural Balance food

My cats do much better on a low-to-moderate protein, high fat, and high taurine diet.

When there are two foods that I have to choose from, I usually chose the food that has the highest fat content.
