Dawn (Boscosmum) posted a dog-food grading sheet a while back. It should basically work for cats also.

I have a problem with the fact that there is animal liver listed on the label. Why don't they tell you what animal the liver comes from? Other than that I may consider them to be ok after they tell me what animal the liver comes from depending on what the animal is. I called the company and left a message asking what animal the animal liver on the label of the pet gold canned food comes from and they never called me back. They claim to be all natural and not use any by-products blah blah blah. Well then, why can't they be specific about their ingredients?

Here is the ingredient list for their kitten canned food. Its not too bad, but there are a few lower quality ingredients.
Sufficient water for processing, turkey, animal liver, chicken, ocean fish, rice flour, dried skimmed milk, egg product, guar gum, choline chloride, vitamins (vitamin E, A, D3, B12 supplements, thiamine mononitrate, niacin, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, folic acid, biotin), minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper proteinate, manganous sulfate, potassium iodide, sodium selenite), salt, carrageenan, potassium chloride, iron oxide, taurine. As stated before, "animal liver" is a little concerning, as you dont know what animal its from. The animal can vary from batch to batch. It also uses rice flour, a grain fraction, which often has little nutritional value. Egg product is typically different than actual healthy eggs. It can often contain egg shells instead. It would also be more prefferable in my opinion if there was another named meat above the "animal liver." So IMO, not a bad food, but not the best. If its all I could afford, and my cats were doing well on it, I would be ok feeding it in a pinch. Definitely better than grocery store brands. |

I am 85% sure that animal liver means beef liver, since beef livers are the cheapest. Since they probably have a little of other animal livers mixed in, they can't just list beef liver on the label
Pork liver and chicken livers are highly favored in Asian communities. Lamb and venision livers are too expensive to be used in cat food. For me, all livers taste the same. I love liver |
