Default Emergency - Please Read

Hi everyone,

I'd like to quickly explain my situation. I hope it's clear with consideration that I'm quite stressed right now. The matter is that my in-door cat escaped outside today and returned covered in what I'm presuming to be motor oil or something of the sort. How she managed to do that, I'm baffled! Her eyes were noticibly burning and closed and she was wet from the substance. I've never had an emergency like this before so I quickly got her into the bathroom and gave her a shower with gentle cat shampoo (imagine what a pleasant scene that was!) and wiped her eyes several times with a moist, cold cloth. Her biggest worry seemed to be getting away from her bath and now she seems to be fine. Her eyes are open and shes eaten a little bit of food. No doubt about it...I'm still taking her to the vet first thing tommorow morning. Meanwhile, is there any advice any of you have? I'm really concerned about permanent damage to her eyes (although it doesn't seem like that's the case, at the moment) and/or poisoning. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is there anyway you could get her to a vet tonight?
Here is the MSDS on motor oil.
For eyes, it says to flush with water for 15 minutes

Quote:
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration.
(BREATHING) If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Someone should stay with victim. Get
medical attention if breathing difficulty persists.
AMERICA’S CHOICE MOTOR OIL

Revision 05/98; MSDS Form No. 82479 - Page 4 of 11
EYES: For direct contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water, holding
eyelids apart, for 15 minutes. If irritation or redness from exposure to vapor
develops, move away from exposure into fresh air. Get medical attention if
irritation or pain persists.
SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash skin thoroughly with
soap and water. Get medical attention if irritation or pain persists.
INGESTION: Immediately get medical attention. Do NOT induce vomiting. If
(SWALLOWING) spontaneous vomiting occurs, keep head below hips to avoid breathing the

Hi, Jennifer,

Thanks so much for that information. And yes, I've decided to leave for the vet's now. Thanks again!

If shes' doing fine now, you've probally done the right thing by bathing her with gentle soap, I would not do anything more if her eyes aren't bothering her, or maybe a gentle rinse. I'm just thinking most cats blink shut so fast she's probally protected herself from the worst.

I had gas in my eyes, and only rinsed for a very breif period, seconds even, that was thirty years ago, and I'm fine though it did sting at the time. Maybe bath her again to emmulsify the oil in her coat if you feel the first bath wasn't enough. Good to hear she is looking better though.

But good luck at the vets, a professional opinion is always the best comfort.

Well, my biggest concern would be how much she ingested, I don't know how long she was covered in oil, but I assume, knowing cats that she must have tried to lick it off at some point. You said she did eat, but still it is alarming and if it is possible to get her to a vet I think it is a good idea, just to be sure.
