Default Kitten with long hair AND short hair??

My 5 week old kitten has what I would consider average length hair on his face and body, but his legs, belly, and part of his sides are a different kind of hair. The hair on his lower half is short, very thick, and very soft. It looks like a thick undercoat, but he has no undercoat like this under his other hair. Has anyone seen or heard of such a thing? His brother and sister have uniform-length coats...

Welcome to CatForum. I foster kittens and I've seen that different-length haircoat fairly often. Usually it indicates a kitty who will have longer fur, or short fur with longer guard hairs. I have several long-haired cats, but only one has uniform long hair over her entire body and tail, the other three have a mix of longer hair at the ruff, chest, body, belly, back-of-legs and tail while having shorter hair at their shoulders and front-of-legs.
heidi =^..^=

Here is a GREAT example of variable hair length on a cat, this is my Shasta:

Thank you, she is a lovely kitty. She has fabulous contrast between her fur lengths and I cannot recall seeing another cat with such variable length in their haircoat.
I've measured her longest fur (ruff & tail) and it is 5 inches long. Her shortest, over her shoulders, is about 1.25 inches.

My ginger recuse Jin is the same. When he arrived he seemed short-haired, but once his fur started growing back he became a fur-ball! He has ear tufts, a long-haired tail and long hair on his belly, but his back and everywhere else is short! Looks like a mop when he's lying down bless him!
