Hi!
My partner and I took in a three month old rescue cat a little over two weeks ago and I'm still feeling a little overwhelmed. This is my first time ever owning a cat (or any pet that wasn't kept in a cage 90% of the time) so I'm trying to do my best to inform and prepare myself for the, hopefully, long road ahead. So, please, be gentle |

Hi Spooky! Many of us here on the forum were first-time cat guardians not that long ago, so I know it seems like there's a lot to know. You're in the right place for that . . . you'll learn a lot here. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Spooky Muffin.
Glad to see you are in Ireland. My Mum lives just outside of Dungarvan and I love visiting I remember feeling overwhelmed when we got Bee our first cat and even more overwhelmed when got her sister Boo a year later. its a big change especially if its your first cat. This forum has become seriously addictive for me and very imformative. Welcome. |

Thank you for the lovely welcome, everybody!
I'm not feeling overwhelmed in any serious way, just that I've had to take in a lot of information over the last month (mostly diet related). When we first decided to get a cat I had no idea that the majority of supermarket cat foods were full of fillers. And that even the expensive dry food that she had been on in the shelter wasn't all that great either. I've ordered a combination of almo and applaws food (from zooplus, because you cannot get decent cat food anywhere local here) that I'll be transitioning her onto gradually. Those were the two food brands that I found that looked decent and are affordable. Hopefully I chose correctly? As for the rescue part, she's was one of five feral kittens who were brought into a shelter after their mother died. They hand reared and socialised her and she is just so affectionate and loveable that you would never known that she had had a feral background! I'll try and get some pictures up later |

Welcome to the forum! Many of us have been first time kitty owners at one point as adults and have stumbled, fallen and made mistakes! I knew NOTHING about cats when we got our first over 20 years ago and made plenty of mistakes!! Forums like this didn't exist - heck, internet didn't exist!!
I'm glad you were able to get a hand raised baby! I'll bet she is a sweetie!

Im from America so the cat food brands are all different. I just asked my vet which ones were best. Have you taken your kitty to the vet yet? Is there anything else you need help with? My kitties pretty much let me know when they need/want something, but I've had kitties all my life so I've learned to interpret their antics a little bit. Im always willing to give kitty advice, though im definately not an expert. All kitties are different, they just need lots of love.
