Default Ruminating

Leving my Mystery aside for now. This is a Sci-fi project I've had in the works for years.

San wearily licked his hand, and smoothed down the fuzz on his nose. THE SHIP! It had been all the news since yesterday, and he'd JUMPED at the chance to make contact. He sighed.

"Attention, unknown craft, your course takes you into the desert. Water levels there are low, gamma levels high, suggest you home in on my signal, divert to Mousefoot Vale, cooler temperatures plenty of water,and..." He broke off. AND US... Couldn't those people hear him,see the lush valleyhe and his fellow umians called home on this planet?

Ohhh, I'm a sucker for First Contact stuff! I just finished "Little Fuzzy", and while it's geared toward a younger audience, I still thought it was great! Debating if I should spend $15+ to get the other sequels (Little Fuzzy was a free e-book, but I can't find the sequels as free anywhere...cheapest is $4 for each real book on Amazon)

I would love to read this... either when you're finished, or as you go along. I won't critique if you don't want me to (but I like the ONE paragraph already!), I'll just simply enjoy the reading ^_^

Perhaps-that had been the idea. The catlike Rumians kept histories which indicated Rum Su was NOT their world of origin, the white giant star it circled, not their sun. The inhabitants of the lush vale-the only truly habitable region of their world were not prone to space travel, and were wary of outsiders, although they loved being VISITED!

"Visiting craft, visiting craft, please be advised, current course will take you beyond habitable range, please respond." His whiskers switched in annoyance. He rubbed the lids covering his china-blue eyes, felt his claws working, sighed. "Visiting craft you are headed toward a gamma-blasted,thin-aired,baking WASTE BOX sector..." He gave up. The blip continued to move across the screen, undeterred. "San". The Rumian jumped a full meter in the air,soft-landed on his paws, turned to the sound of the intruder... "Saru?" The silvery child blinked sea-green eyes, and giggled while the older creamy white Rumian tried to marshall his wounded dignity. "Aren't you supposed to be in SCHOOL?" "We got the day off! The alien ship..." Yes,the aliens were all the talk, and the cities, farms and colonies of Rum Su all ground to a halt. "Mommy says you gotta walk me home." Nodding,San ushered his sister toward the door. On the sreen, the blip began, almost unnoticeably,to slow.

The Rumians were a bi-pedal, catlike people. Expert climbers in the vale's forests, and uncanny fishers in the streams and rivers. No other intelligent life in their world- no competitors or allies. But this is not to say that everything was cream and birdsong on Rum Su. There WAS intrigue, and while most Rumian eyes looked north to where the ship was landing with eager warmth, there were some that gazed cooly and wondered how these events might suit them. Korrrm surveyed his model starship. Yes,spacefarers brought new plants to seed, animals to add to the vale's denizens. Prosperity. "Power.' Korrm started at his own voice. On the air came Jade and the click-click call for dinner. He unmuted the sat-v watched the news bulletins on the ship excatly 15 seconds, then hurried along. Jade had fried up blue laserfish, named for their bright hue. "It's confirmed-the craft HAS set down...

'HMMPH!' This is a complete and accurate summary of humanity's PRO-FOUND-LY off-the-mark first impression of Rum-Su. A more detailed account is soon to follow. "Ent it just like a Mewhan (common usage of the term HUMAN among Rumian elders who generally share this sentiment) to leave a big sign CARVED IN STEEL (This is really funny if you speak Rumian) when they've gone and made it that there's NOBODY HERE!"

A group of scouts led by Thistledown,a youthful, courageeous scout, approached the stele with all the steady, intrepid impatience of a species that has not quite abandoned their predator ways.

After running scans of the atmosphere, the crew of the exploratory vessel MEKONG decided that....BASED ON THEIR LIMITED DATA... the entire planet was probably an arid desert, and was not feasible for colonization. Radio signals SEEMINGLY from the planet's surface was probably background noise from the planet's sun, and neighboring stars. And after leaving the traditional written message (dictated by new-approved 'traditional' protocol) ,the MEKONG drained excess heat from her power cells, and took wing, journeying to other worlds that were 'possibilities.'
