Default What IS it about academic staff.

I am really getting hacked off with these academics now.

We have a load of boxes containing journal articles and reports etc selected by course tutors for students too lazy to look things up themselves. We (as a library) have decided to digitise all that we can (obeying all copyright laws, and archiving the stuff we can put online (or that is online already)). This project started off with an email from the library manager to ALL tutors informing them of this, and would they like to let us know what is essential. We got 4 replies, most of which asked "what boxes are these then?".

Today I was called out to the loans desk by a colleague who had a very annoyed looking tutor standing there. He basically said why were we doing this, why had we "thrown away" all of "his" articles, and why didn't we tell him about this?

I explained the project to him, the articles were still on my desk, and that we'd be happy to put back anything that we could, and that as far as I was aware an email had gone out, but I don't know if everyone had got it (I tend to try and bs my way out when I know the absolute truth will make him annoyed - that he definitely got the email, but was too lazy to do anything about it). He was not a happy man. He said what about the students who did resits last week? I said I didn't know about the resits just taken. He then got bitchy and said "you didn't know students have to do resits?". "YES I know about -ing resits, I only did some myself a few years ago you cheeky bearded git, I just didn't know about the ones your poxy failed students did" I wanted to say. I didn't though. I just apologised like I'd accidentally slept with his wife, and said I'd deal with it.

Honestly, universities would be run a lot smoother, and a lot more cheaply without these people. Just have proper scientists, a few admins and the librarians. No teaching staff and no students. I think that's reasonable. Ok my dad would have been without work for 40 years, but he can be a real PITA at times.

Academics seem to live in their own world, away from the real life problems.

In 6 months after you have done all the hard work on this project some acedemic will realize how brilliant it is and will take credit for the idea.

No, they'll still be moaning.

They're not like company managers (who WOULD do that), but they're like the old farts in the corner grumbling how it all used to be so much better when things were done on tablets of stone.

Oh! You mean like these Geezers?

Yeesh! We had a patron complain last week that we keep the doors to The Heritage Room *gasp!* locked. 0_o
Oh, Heavens!
The patron who wishes to *use* the room has to come ask to have the door unlocked because we use that lock as a means to protect very old and delicate documents from careless patrons (kids, mostly) who are not aware of the worth, age and delicacy of the microfiche machinery and documents kept safely within ...

Stone Tablets are accessible during a power shortage or after the collapse of modern civilization. I'm just sayin'.
