Changed the subject because I'm retired. Ha! I'm busier now than when
I was working.

My last job was with a design and documentation firm. It was a small place
(about six people tops), owned by a husband and wife. She was a designer
(ads, magazine layouts, eventually Web site work). He was a technical writer
(computer manuals, online help systems).

I did the technical writing stuff. Also hired and shepherded a group of part-
time writers who were paid to summarize articles that went on a consultant's
Web site.

Until my eyes started to go, it was a fun gig. Now I spend more time at the
computer than I did at work. I do miss the free coffee...

Anyone else?
Neat topic!

I'm an Executive Assistant to the CEO at a major health insurance company in my city. I just graduated college a year ago, so I feel very fortunate to have landed this position so soon!

It's definitely tough, though. Lots of aspects - booking travel, coordinating meetings, documents, travelling myself, etc etc. Hectic and time consuming to say the least! BUT It's what I went to school for, I have a great boss, even better hours! (Monday to Friday, 8 - 4, sometimes later, depending on if he is there or not... LOL ), and fully paid benefits!

More time to spend with my kittens, too, of course. The days that I am stressing out at my desk, all I have to do is look at their cute little faces and I get instantly rejuvenated. Coffee helps, too! hehe.

I'd really like to open a little bistro on my side of town.

Light breakfast, coffee, bagels, wine & cheese, very good sandwiches and soups, close around 8 pm every evening.

I haven't the first clue about running something like that though.

The restaurant biz can be a killer. Many have gone under for failing to see
if there's actually a demand.

-- what's the traffic like?

-- what's the competition?

-- can you find a cook? a manager?

-- can you get funding?

Etc. etc.

What do your friends and family say?

Is this a dream or a burning desire?

Having opened my own business I now understand why so many small businesses fail. The reality is that you have to be a business person with an interest in whatever product you're selling, as opposed to someone who is passionate about a product but has no business sense. For example, a person with a strong business background who likes to cook would likely be successful at owning a restaurant, if that same person also has an interest in exercising they would also likely be successful at owning a gym. But someone who loves to cook with no business background is unlikely to be successful at owning a restaurant and they are also very likely to be unhappy because they will have very little opportunity to cook.

I own a pet store...I spend the vast majority of my time in the back room doing orders, dealing with returns to my vendors, payroll, paying taxes, entering data in Quickbooks, creating promotions, designing ads, setting up events (e.g. product demos), managing pricing, managing inventory, entering new items into my computer system etc. etc. As a small business owner, I can't afford to pay someone to do these things and I wouldn't trust someone else to do most of them. I make sure to allow my self a few hours here and there to interact with customers, especially on Saturday's because that's when the most dogs come in. If I was a pet lover with no business background, this place would have gone under a long time ago.

What a full spectrum of people we have here. Thought I would chime in:

Currently, I am stuck between two potential jobs as I posted under the "I am a bum" thread. But if you haven't read it, I basically was fanatically searching for a job and then got two interviews in one day. One job offered me a position (foal watcher for a large horse farm) and the other is interested and set me up with a shadowing date (tomorrow!) in a chiropractor's office to be an assistant which is like, a receptionist/patient helper.

I feel blessed to have an opportunity to PICK the job I want basically.

Before this, I have mostly retail management experience. I have been assistant or department manager for places like Blockbuster, Petco, etc. I have had failed attempts at crappy jobs too. Also I was a phlebotomist (people who take your blood at hospital) when I was going to school for prenursing. Thats when I realized I didn't want to be a nurse.

I also realized I hate retail management

So now I am trying to pick which of the two very different places I want to work at.

Ideally, I would like to be a pony. Or a fat house cat.

I look for a job for a living. And I feed my cats, but they are lousy with tips. All they do is leave me "treasures" in their litter box!

I'm a night janitor at a sports arena. We get to see events for free-at least the last 30 minutes! Mostly it's just upkeep, but at an event, we're up in the stands tackling the big messes people make! The toughest job I remember:April 2010, Third Eye Blind concert. We were there til 2:30 a.m. The groupies trashed one room so bad, someone broke a broom, sweeping it out! We still have it in the office. We've also been a lost and found sometimes. Once a little girl came back in, missing her gloves. I searched the seats, found em' 'THANKS SIR!' Big smile. It really is an O.K job.

I'll bet you have some great stories to tell, and have found some pretty
weird and/or gross stuff.
