Hi guys. I'm sad to announce that my betta Miyavi( who is probably 2 now, but I got him last year in August of 2010) got his wings the other day. That was one reason I took a break on here. He was very ill, had a really small case of dropsy, fin rot and possible ich. It start of February of this year when he started to become ill. He was eating and stuff, but hasn't made any bubbles. So several months later he started to develop discoloration of his fins. He was starting to get pale and lethargic. in November I started to put in his new tank after it was cycled. I thought it will solve it, but I guess it didn't. His scales were spiky like a pin cone and today he look so sick that I don't think even a water change will do anything. So I made a difficult decision to humanely euthanized him. He will be missed.
Misa even looks sad now. She really like looking at Miyavi when I feed him and the other fishy's

Miyavi? You're a fishlorian...I remember reading about him. Sorry for your loss, dropsy is tough. I just recently had to deal with columnaris. At least now it is contained to my quarantine tank instead of being in my display tank...so sad.

Dropsy is probably the most challenging of all fish ailments. It's actually a symptom of another disease, usually a liver condition, and by the time it reaches the "pinecone" stage, it is pretty much impossible to cure. I've heard of a few fish improving for a short time, but they all seem to succumb to it eventually. Over the years I have lost two goldfish and a betta to it, and last year I lost a two-foot koi to it. I'm afraid it's something that all fish keepers will encounter from time to time.

I've had fish die of dropsy.. it pretty much signifies that they are in total organ failure so I think you did the right thing. Bettas are not supposed to live more than a couple of years anyways and it sounds like you gave Miyavi a good life.
I think the secret to bettas is the bigger the tank the better. My betta, Barracuda, is living in a 55 gallon tank and he is more than 6 years old. Crazy right?
