Unhappy RIP Sadie August 21, 2001 - December 17, 2011

We had to euthanise Sadie yesterday due to a second obstipation (first was in October, and she was deobstipated).

I'm wondering if anyone here has any tips on how to help my other two cats with their grief. I don't think it has completely sunk in for them that she's not coming back, but it's starting to - at this very moment, Edie, my youngest, is sitting halfway down the stairs looking at the front door and "waiting". (She and Sadie didn't get along well, but occasionally Edie would tolerate her enough to allow her a close-up sniff or two.) Church, my oldest, and Sadie were especially close and often used to lay down and cuddle up with each other on the couch or in the bean bag chair. I would really appreciate some tips on how to help them through this. This is my first time having to euthanise in a multi-pet situation, so I've never dealt with surviving pet grief.

I am so very sorry for your less. I know how much you must miss her, and how hard of a decision that must have been to make. You did the right thing, and I hope that your heart will heal and in time you will be able to remember her and smile instead of cry. *hugs*

As for the remaining cats. Just spend extra time with them, petting, talking, cuddling. It will help not only them but you as well. Play with them a lot... it will help decrease everyone's stress, and help you smile at their frisky antics.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. That must have been very difficult. I think Rachel gave you some good advice, and I can't add to that. I hope Church is doing well these days (I seem to recall he was diagnosed with CRF a while back).

When Samantha passed in May I was going to bury her in the yard so they put her in a nice box.
When I got home I place the box on the floor opened it and called Chiquita over, even though they'd never been friends the shared the house and their Papa for 11 years.
Chiquita came over and sniffed Samantha's body then sat there quietly for a minute then went back to her spot on the sofa.
I resealed the box and put it in another room and gave Chiquita lots of attention.
I changed my mind and had Samantha's body cremated but I believe Chiquita knew she was dead and not coming back.

He's doing VERY well. Switching to raw diet (last January) has helped him a great deal. He's strong again, and his creatinine level has been dramatically reduced (it was 380 in September 2010, down to 180 in March 2011, and down again to 171 this past October). He's a bit depressed right now, though - which is to be expected.

we had to deal with kitty grief when we lost our silvie cat, found that keeping out a cushion bed that still had her scent provided some comfort to the cat that was nightly searching the house for her..
