Hero or naughty kitty?

I was rushing out of the house late Monday AM and had plans to be out until about 8:00 or 9:00 PM. In all the fuss, we accidentally closed Pumpkin in a closet in one of the kids' bedrooms My husband was here, but he didn't notice her missing because she keeps to herself sometimes.

Around 5:00 PM, he was going around the house closing windows, etc. before he was to leave and meet me. He heard a noise in the closet and smelled something unpleasant. He went to that bedroom, saw cat poop on the floor just inside the door, went to the closet and opened it to find Pumpkin. There was also a mess near the top of the stairs on the way to the bedroom.

Pepper was the only one who could have left the messes since Pumpkin was locked up. She's the cleanest cat and doesn't even kick the litter from the box -- she's certainly never done this before. When Pumpkin has gotten closed in rooms before, Pepper will pace outside the door until Pumpkin is let out.

I think she was trying to alert my husband to Pumpkin being locked up, or she was upset and refused to leave the area. I'm curious to hear what you all think.

I think she was probably distraught about pumpkin being locked in the closet.

Can't know for sure, Lisa, but I think that's a reasonable theory. I'll vote for "hero."

Well, no accidents since that day, so it definitely seems that Pepper was reacting to Pumpkin's dliemna.

Pepper meows very little and when she does, it's usually a quiet little squeak. I guess she's learned another way to get attention
