How long should I wait to handle the kitten?

My cat Zelda had a kitten about 36 hours ago. She never got a very big tummy but we thought she'd have more than one. How common is is to just have one?

Momma is very proud! She wants us to stay with her and pet her while she nurses. I've always heard that you shouldn't handle newborn kittens. How long should I wait?

You can handle a new born kitten. But you dont want to stress out the mother by holding it too much. You need to keep her stress free. It can affect the milk production.

Ok, I was hoping I could. Momma seems not to mind me touching him/her. Being only one kitten it cries and cries when momma gets up to eat or drink and I feel so bad for the kitten.
