Is my cat just old or sick?

Hi, my eight year old male cat hasn't been acting himself lately. He walks slower and has a slight limp in his hind leg and his breathing seems as if it is heavy and possible more laboured. Also he has been sleeping for longer periods of time and will stay in the same place in the house for hours on end. I have also noticed that he has been keeping his mouth open and often he will sneeze, and make a wheezing sound. I will be bringing him into the veterinary clinic on Wednesday but I was just wondering what all this might be caused by? Does he have artheritis? Is it that he is just getting older or is there something more serious that I am not aware of?

I am very concerned and if anyone has had similar experiences or knows what may be wrong I would really appretiate a reply.
Thank you. S.B

Welcome and I'm sorry you are begining posting with concerns for your kitty.
First, I don't think 8 is 'old' for a cat. It does sound like something serious is going on, and I couldn't even venture a guess as most of my ideas are probably very scary (and hopefully way off). Ordinarily with a limp, I'd just think a pulled muscle, but the labored breathing and decrease in activity are all signs something more serious is going on. Lets just say it is a good thing you'll be taking him to the vet Wednesday.

I'm sure they'll do an exam and want to pull blood to see what is going on inside with him. Please let us know what the vet finds, as your experience may help another cat owner with a similar problem.

8 is just middle aged for a kitty. I hope it's nothing serious, too.
