My trio need to see the feline dentist.

Yes, I do realize it's the vet that does the dental exam. I was just being silly.

But anyway, Lauren and I have noticed that all three cats have tartar build up on their teeth. And I know from reading on here, that if left untreated, it can end up causing pain and possible tooth extractions. I called VetCo to find out how much they charge for a feline dental exam. At first they quoted me a price of $225 (which included anesthesia, blood work up, pain meds...). I told the receptionist that I have three cats so she put me on hold for a few minutes. She came back to the line and told me that her manager said that they could do for $180 per cat. My question is this: Is that the going rate for feline dental exams? She did tell me that any extractions or surgery would be extra. My plan is to call around to different vets in my area to see if I can find a cheaper price, but I'm wondering if it's going to be an exercise in futility.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated, especially from the SoCal bunch. Maybe one of you is in neck of the woods and can direct me to a cheaper vet.

Thanks!

Re: My trio need to see the feline dentist.

What you're describing doesn't sound like an exam, it sounds like the actual cleaning. If so, $180 each is darn cheap.

That's wicked cheap. My vet STARTS at $350 for cleaning. But she told me to wait until January, which is apparently cat dental health month everywhere and it's cheaper.

Wow. My vet quoted it at 500 dollars. I think I need a second opinion.

Re: My trio need to see the feline dentist.

My vet is usually a little over $200.00 - more if there are extractions. I usually space the cleanings out over a few months so all of the expense does not come at once. The FeLV+ guys get cleaned more often because bad teeth can be a source of trouble for them.

I never had to get any of my cats done, thankfully. The vet looks at their teeth when they get needles, and they have some tartar but vet isn't concerned with any of them. I guess I been lucky?
