My cat just died....why?

Hello, I'm new here. Unfortunately I have a sad story and a question. I've had my cat Melonie since 1999 when I rescued her from the pound (she was about 3 years old then). She was a tabby with a white belly - probably a mix. She was a wonderful cat - very affectionate, low maintenance, easygoing. She was overweight but not terribly so - insatiable appetite. Yet never any health problems. Last night she was being her normal self. Let me emphasize totally normal self. As she was laying on the carpet, all of a sudden she let out a short, unusual cry that immediately grabbed my attention. Then she went silent and her eyes were totally glazed over, her tongue slightly out, and she went limp. She just simply died. I brought her to the vet immediately just to confirm she was dead - I was in shock. Anyway, I am obviously deeply saddened. But I wish I knew what happened to her - no so much so that I want to pay for a necropsy. But maybe cat people out there could speculate.... Input of any kind is welcome. Thank you very much.

I'm so sorry about your Melonie passing away, she sounds like she had a charmed life with you.
It sounds like whatever happened, happened very quickly. Heart attack or most likely an anneyurism(sp?).
Once again, I'm sorry for your loss,
Heidi

I don't know why Melonie might have died, but I am so sorry that she did. It must have been so traumatic for you to have her go to the Rainbow Bridge so suddenly.

Other people on this forum are far more insightful on medical issues than I am, but I did want to say that I'm very sorry for your loss. It sounds like Melonie had a great life.

How wonderful that you adopted an adult. If it wasn't for you, who knows what the future would have held for her. As it is, you both had so many years of love from each other.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I, too, am sorry that your Melonie died. You may never know the reasons, but what a way to go.... quickly and with the person whom she loved most in this world. I wish we could all be so lucky when it is our time to go. Carry her in your heart; she will be there whenever you think of her. Sorry.

It sounds like a heart attack or an aneurysm like Heidi said, I've seen horses go down rather quickly from both without warning and have heard of cats and dogs go the same way by both of those things. It was quick and painless I'm sure which is the best way to go, and she died at home with you nearby, an even better way to go.

I'm sorry you lost your sweet Melonie. Just like sudden death in humans, heart attack, aneurysm, or even a stroke are all possibilities.

I sincerely thank everyone for their kind sentiments. This has been very difficult for me, as you can probably imagine. Its likely that only those who have pets/cats can truly understand the anguish of such a loss. It was probably some cardiovascular affliction that occurred.
