Cat outside, with dog?

I got a cat, and this is my first one, that i've ever had for myself. I've had it for a few weeks, but the rules are he has to stay in my room, and i know he wants to go outside, cause he sneaks out when we leave the door open. The problem is, I don't really want to let him outside unsupervised with my dog, that seems to think he looks delicious. I've only let them meet once, and I had to watch my dog, and it almost took a snap at its tail. What I need to know is will it be alright if i let my cat out, and how will it know when to come back and how to make it come back to the door? Please help, i'm sure he's bored as ****.

Have you considered an inexpensive enclosure? Here are some pictures. Some are quite inexpensive and easy to build.

In the meantime, I would put a collar and leash on your cat. Just let it drag until he gets used to it. Then you will be able to take him outside. If he learns to walk on a leash, that would be great! Good luck.

Here's another web page with some ideas for outdoor cat enclosures - http://florencehumane.org/catio.htm

It is never a good idea to put a cat and a high prey drive dog together.

Re: Cat outside, with dog?

Those enclosure's look good. But I think I've gotten good news, yesterday a little after I made a post I went out and worked. With the cat and dog, so far my dog has learned, the cats still a little independent. I took some pictures. And I can now, tell my dog to find the cat sortof, when it gets out the fence. Seems like my dog is getting protective of it. The cat doesn't really like the fact, ima keep working with them, I got some pictures though.

Ima keep working with them and see if I can get it 100% safe. My grandpa was telling me that it looked like it'd work out good. If It doesn't i'll probably build an enclosure. But so far so good. I'll respond in a couple of days, to tell everyone how it's going. I got a big yard too, So it has plenty of room too roam around. n.n Thanks for the replies.

Your cat and dog look very sweet. You could always muzzle the dog when he is near the cat. High prey dogs are hard to break of their insinctual drive. I would atleast keep a leash on your dog when they are out together so you could control him. I would never leave a cat outside unsupervised. Even if a dog isnt around.
