Hi Everyone! New to the Cat World

Hi everyone! I am new to the cat world. I have never really "owned" a cat, except for a very friendly feral who would visit me quite often many years ago. So I'm at a loss of where to start.

All my life I've had dogs. My current dog Spirit is nearing 16 years old. She is the sweetest most loving dog I've ever had in my life. Her disposition is totally amazing, and my husband and I have decided we want to end our dog ownership with her. She is the pinnacle of all dogs, and we don't want another when she leaves. When my baby passes we would like to get a cat. It was my husband's idea, but he hasn't owned any cats since he was a kid.

My friend at work has abyssinians and has totally convinced me that they are wonderful cats. The research I've done shows they are loyal, loving, friendly cats. Do different cat breeds have different personalities? I am so sold on abyssinians now, I just have to have one...or two, down the line when my baby is gone.

I have so many questions to ask about cats I don't know where to start. I saw a book on amazon called The Cat Bible and it got some pretty good reviews.

Can anyone recommend some good books to get me started? Thank you for your help, and I'm glad to be here. Sheryl

Welcome!

Here's a good rescue site for when you're thinking of getting one.

http://www.abyssinian-rescue.com/

And here's a good list of books (lower down on the left)

Re: Hi Everyone! New to the Cat World

Welcome to Cat Forum, Sheryl!

There is another book titled, "The Mind of a Cat", that will give you good start. One thing to remember, though, is that books tend to oversimplify when they try to write about a cat's mind. Kitties are more complex than the purely instinct-driven creatures that most books portray.

Different breeds do have different tendencies in their personalities, but there's more than genetics in a cat's personality. Like humans, cats are individuals.
But here is an article to get you started.

Re: Hi Everyone! New to the Cat World

Marie and John, Thank you so much for your replies! I am very excited learning about cats.

The links you gave are great!

We are thinking, when the time comes of getting two baby girls so they won't be lonely all day (we both work full time).

I am going to read, read and then read some more so that I am prepared and know what I am doing. Thanks again for your responses.

Re: Hi Everyone! New to the Cat World

I adopted Cali and Charlee together when they were 10 weeks old. They're inseparable and best buds. I would highly recommend it.
