Fozzy is at the vet...help!

Long story short, Fozzy must have sat in his freshly used litter box because yesterday morning, I saw his entire behind was covered and matted with clumping litter. He always must have drug his behind on the carpet in the basement to get rid of it. Anyways, with a long haired cat and clumping litter…that does NOT make for a good combination. I kept him in the basement yesterday and when my husband and I got home, we tried combing and cutting but Fozzy wasn’t having it, rightfully so. You can tell he’s hurting and his poor tongue has got to be sore because he’s trying to clean the area.

I knew the only way to get it taken care of was to take him to the groomer at the vet and get his behind shaved. I took him in this morning and of course they said they had to sedate him which I am fine with and then the groomer proceeds to tell me what they typically do to cats is give them the “lion” cut. We all know what that is! I thought maybe she misunderstood so I reiterated he just needs his behind fur cut because of the clumping litter in it. She insisted he won’t look right and said they had to do the lion cut. I told her AGAIN that I don’t care what his behind looks like after the shave but that the rest of his fur is perfectly fine…very long but not matted or knotted…and that all I want is his behind shaved. She finally said once she assess him, she’ll call me before she starts and let me know if he needs the lion cut of not. What the heck?! That’s like me going in for a hair cut and them insisting they have to cut me bangs.

I don’t know what part of “I don’t want a lion cut!” they don’t understand?! I want him to be functional, not fashionable. And I don’t want him to freeze so I def. want just his bottom shaved….how do I reiterate that to them??

It’s almost lunch time and I haven’t heard from them yet….

Re: Fozzy is at the vet...help!

You tell them:

Do NOT give my cat a "lion cut". My cat needs ONLY a 'potty patch' shaved at his back end for sanitary reasons. If you give him a lion cut I will lodge a complaint and refuse to pay because you would have willfully disobeyed my reasonable request.

Long haired cats going in for spays only get their belly area shaved, not a lion cut. There is no reason (grooming of body fur) for Fozzy to require a lion cut over a sanitary 'potty patch'.
I hope they do only what is necessary and not an iota more.

That's strange! We had Rookie's stomach area shaved a couple times, and they never imsinuated that she needed a lion cut or anymore than that. I sure wouldn't go back to that place. And who knows, if they were truly willing to do the potty area, maybe Fozzy wouldn't have needed to be sedated.

The last time I took Cinderella in to get groomed (she had a nasty matt on her chest), the groomer asked me if I wanted a lion cut for her. Huh? No, just tidy up her potty patch, please.

Wow! Sounds like that groomer is totally unreasonable. She needs to see more of peoples backs going out the door with their animals, and no more business for her.
I hope you end up with only what you asked for. Poor Fozzy!

Re: Fozzy is at the vet...help!

Is there a difference between groomers and vets on this type of thing? Are groomers known for pushing more services than you asked for, versus vets who just do what you said to do?

Re: Fozzy is at the vet...help!

Wow, I would have just said "let me be perfectly clear I-DO-NOT-WANT-A-LION-CUT, do you understand?"

But really why cut at all? I'd plunk his butt in a tub of water...poop and clumping litter will dissolve when faced with large quantities of water.

You make it sound so easy, Lisa! I couldn't do that with my girls!
