So my girls are not 100% cowardly custards!

I finally managed to see some bravery from my girls last night I am so proud of them!

I have posted on here before about any humans coming into the house or walking too near the house (ie postman etc) leaves both my girls as jibbering wrecks hidding under sofas until the danger passes.

Yesterday I saw a massive tom cat looking through our back door. I had not seen him before so I wandered over to the door to have a look at him and started talking to him through the open window. My girls must have heard me talking as they both came in together. I was expecting panic when they saw the other cat so I was so suprised when both girls stuck their tails high and wandered straight over to where the other cat was sitting. The cat in the garden was getting stressed out fluffing himself up and making noises while my girls just settled down watching him. No tail flicking nothing they were so relaxed! Eventually the tom got himself too worked up and gave a stiff legged walk back down the garden glancing back over his shoulders as he went. My girls get a big cuddle for being so brave!

In retrospect I suppose I should not have been so suprised as my girls were rescued as 6 months olds from a filthy house owned by an elderly woman who had around 30 cats in horrible conditions. So really I should not have been suprised that they were completely unbothered by a strange cat! I just need to get all visitors to pretend to be cats now!

Perhaps you can have a cat at the door that they can rub all over them before entering your house so they smell more like cat than human?

Re: So my girls are not 100% cowardly custards!

It's great that it worked out, but please be aware that it could have been disastrous. A re-directed aggression incident between your cats or between one of your cats and you was very much a possibility. I've been there and it isn't pretty, took me months and months to get my cats to tolerate each other again. Oh...and $500 worth of vet bills for the abscesses from the fight. It's not a good idea to encourage your cats to interact with cats outside the door or in the yard.

I'm sorry, I don't want to burst your bubble of pleasure that they accepted this cat without fear. But re-directed aggression is a real problem for many inside cats that most cat owner's are not aware of.
