What is Distemper?

Is it the feline equivalent of Alzheimers? Or some viral infection? My understanding's that it's deadly. I don't want to overreact, but Percy's behavior is changing. He's doing stuff he never did before, like digging in the garbage. He keeps demanding I feed him-when he's already eaten plenty. He's cranky. This is not my Percy-fruit!

I have the feeling that it's high time for Percy to see the Vet. Changes like this in a cat's behaviour should really translate into alarm bells for us!

If it's any comfort, Nito digs in the garbage, demands food, and has cranky spells every day and he's been given a clean bill of health. Either way, if you've noticed a drastic change, a checkup never hurt anyone.

Re: What is Distemper?

Mostly you can always look something like this up on the Web. (I just typed 'distemper' into Microsoft's Bing search engine and went on from there.) What you describe doesn't sound like the description of feline distemper given here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_Panleukopenia

Hope your cat gets better soon.

Re: What is Distemper?

What you are describing is not distemper. My Tucker died from distemper and it is a horrible disease. Still it he has so many issues a vet visit would be the best thing.

I'd have him checked over just to be sure.
Sometimes a thyroid problem can cause them to be grumpy and also constantly hungry...

Re: What is Distemper?

Tapeworms, an intestinal parasite, can make a cat grumpy and would also make them feel hungry all the time. A vet visit is definitely in order.
Tapeworm is not a dire problem, but you should bring Percy to see his doctor.

Re: What is Distemper?

Any big change like this should ring an alarm bell, but it doesn't actually sound that serious.

As for distemper... wow. I had no idea it was so horrible...

Re: What is Distemper?

Good news! He doesn't have distemper! After a looong hiatus in the litterbox he was back to his happy self again this morning! Too many jammy dodgers,no doubt.
