Lost My Kitten, Found Possibly Feral

Hi,

I lost my 6-month-old kitten on a campsite full of feral cats. After two weeks, I finally found her but she appears to be balding around the temples, scared, quiet, starving, and her hair has been mangled.

She never got vaccinated and I couldn't find her again when I went to find the kitty carrier.

Question:

What are my options here? If I can manage to get her in a carrier, could a vet make her better? I also have a cat at home, would they be safe together? Is there any hope that she'll be the active, loveable cat she was before?

A vet can help her physical wounds, but is sounds like she was quite traumatized. The vet should check for an any communicable diseases she might have picked up from the feral cats.

Only a lot of patience and TLC on your end can help her emotionally. Keep her separated from your other cats at first. She’ll be quite frightened and it is likely other cats in the house will not recognize her scent right away. Look up “cat introductions on google. You will need to treat this like bringing a brand new cat into the house.

When you get her home, in her own room. Give her some space and let her get settled in. Talk gently to her and wait for her to come to you.

When you go back, bring a large towel with you. You can try to wrap your cat up in it to avoid being clawed or bitten. Take the cat strait to the vet.

Ok, that's good to know it's possible. Would she be safe in my trailor for a day or two? I won't be able to get a ride to the vet for a few days if I'm able to find her and capture her again. Also, this may be a stupid question but is there any harm she can do to me? If she bites or scratches me?

Has she been vaccinated for Rabies? If not that would be a concern.

Other then that you can get a pretty bad infection from a bite. Deep cat bites should be treated with antibiotics ASAP.

No, she was never vaccinated for rabies. She didn't look like she had rabies though. Is her biting what I need to worry about? Would it be Ok to pet her, if she allows it?

If you can not approach her, you could try a live trap. Many animal shelters have these available to rent if you put down a deposit.

She may just be scared right now, and with some patience she'll probably revert back to the lovable friendly cat she was before. It might not take much or it could be some work depending on what happened to her.
You will definitely need to keep her quarantined away from your other cat for a while.

You do need to worry about her biting you. Like already mentioned, cat saliva carries some very nasty bacteria and a bite can get very badly infected. You mention there are some bald spots in her fur. These could be the result of a fight but its possible it could be ringworm. Ringworm is not a worm at all but a fungal infection that can be transmitted to people. You probably won't want to pet her too much until you know thats not what it is, and if you do pet her, make sure you wash your hand well afterwards with an antibacterial/anti fungal soap.

I hope you are able to get your kitty back. good luck!

Great, thank you both for the advice. I thought it was hopeless but I'm feeling a lot better. Hopefully I'll get her back next weekend.
