The Look

There is a look in the Feral Catís face that says they trust only themselves.
There is a look in the Abused Catís face that says they trust no one.
There is a look in the Confused Catís face that says they donít know who to trust.
There is a look in the Confident Catís face that says they choose to honor you with their trust.

I live for the moments when I can witness the Feral, the Abused and the Confused catsí expressions change from fear to Confidence. Recognizing their moment of blind faith when they have finally chosen to trust me is one of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced.
THOSE are the moments I look forward to in my socializing work with all kitties.

Do you have any special "epiphany" moments with your cats that you would like to share?

Re: The Look

Wow! Well put, Heidi.

I think for me the most special moment was when I heard Zaya purr for the first time. Then I knew I had succeeded in making her happy Well, and also when she climbs up onto the bed in the morning, kneads, purrs and asks for scratchins, and lays on my head, and gives me hugs ) I know she is probably just thinking "Get up already and feed me, human", but my heart melts every time

Re: The Look

When my FeLV+ kitty Buzz was recovering from being anemic the first time I used to take him out on my deck and sit and pet him for as long as I could. He would purr and have such a euphoric look on his face, my sweet Buzzy who had been abused, contracted feline leukemia, was afraid of most people. During those precious moments on the deck were the times I think he was completely happy in his too short life.

Re: The Look

Oh, Sue...I remember reading about those porch sessions in the fresh air. Didn't you post some pics of him on a swing-seat? Something with a canvas cushion?
There is nothing like looking into the eyes of a cat who is supremely happy to have such undivided attention from their person...

Re: The Look

I took Cinderella out of her "prison" and brought her home, only thinking of rehoming her, having never had a cat before. But when I woke up the next morning and she was next to me on my pillow, purring, I looked into those beautiful, trusting eyes and that was it. She had snuck into my heart and I was hers.

Re: The Look

I had to look after a stray my parents took in just before they went on vacation. She didnt get along real well with Baily and barely tolerated Psycho so she spent most of the time under the couch or bed. On the last night she was to be there she joined me after I went to bed. I was laying on my stomach when she walked up, layed her head on my cheek and started purring. I knew then and there that she wouldnt be going home with my parents the next day (they were relieved because their dog would bark at her everytime she moved). She's still with me and its been a battle at times but the kitties are finally getting along.

With Baily it was when I woke up one cold winter morning and he was under the covers with his head on my pillow.

With Psycho, well he's Psycho and I am still awaiting for the Epiphany.

If you can't spoil a pet, there is no use in having one.

Re: The Look

Recntly, I had one of those moments with Arianwen.
She used to not like being held at all. She would get scared and struggle to get down, after only a few seconds. Of course, I always let her down very gently, but not slow enough to scare her.

Well recently, I picked her up, and instead of getting scared, she relaxed, looked into my eyes, gave me blinkies and started purring! I can't describe the sweet surprise of that moment!

Re: The Look

The biggest epiphany moment I've had with Murphy was when the woman at the SPCA brought him out from the back room to be seen by us. (They have 300 cats there, so a vast majority of them are in cages in the back where no one could even see them to adopt. I had seen his picture on the web site, so we asked for him specifically.)

Out he came in the arms of the woman, looking oh-so-alert, happy, excited, and hopeful. It was like he was saying to himself, "Wow! Wow!" It was the cutest, happiest expression I've ever seen on a cat. Slam-dunk, he went home with us that day.

Re: The Look

That moment for me was the day I decided to let Ginger be out of her cage without a leash. I asked DH to take her out back on the leash one last time, I opened the front door and yelled for her and she came running so fast she ran past me, threw on her brakes and came back to me. Her energy reassured me that every minute of time and penny I'd put into her and the babies was worth it. She had full faith in me. I'm reassured everyday I come home from work and she is laying on the front porch waiting for me.
