Kitty's First Grooming

Reeses - 15 months - had her first grooming yesterday. My lovely cat had developed mats under her arms and legs, with one on her neck. They bathed her, got the mats out and groomed her undercoat. Wow, kitty who looked as if she's stuck a paw in an electric socket looked normal. Not a cat who likes to be brushed, hopefully, I can get her to cooperate to keep the mats down.

Here's what surprises me - my husband found a pic from 9/2009. in 4 months, a cat who was very medium-haired all over developed this long fur, esp. around her neck and her haunches. It seems as if it happened overnight, though I know it didn't. But is this normal???

Re: Kitty's First Grooming

I would say - blame the weather! It's possible her hair didn't actually grow, but rather a thick undercoat grew underneath and is making her look more "poofy". Lots of cats have different summer and winter coats to help the adapt to the different temperatures. Does your cat go outside?

Cali has a huge, lovely ruff around her neck and very long britches, which I don't think were really there when she was young. I'd have to go back to old pictures to see when they really started coming in.

Oi! Stitch has such long fur, if I don't brush him everyday then he'll get matts. But that's not surprising. He rolls around on the floor with the other cats all day long. The only problem is, he HATES groomers! So, I've had to buy and learn how to use all these different types of brushes, soaps, etc.. He's lucky I love him as much as I do.

Re: Kitty's First Grooming

Reeses is indoors only. From her condition when we adopted her, I believe she went outdoors. The poor girl lived in a house with 3 pit bulls and is still skittish. When we first got her, she hid under beds most of the time.

She looks so good now that I hope I can keep it up. She will roll around on one part of the kitchen counter so I can feel for mats - so far so good!
