My cat thinks Im stupid

She only has two games that she's interested in atm. Me hiding her mouse under the corner of the by now severely insulted carpet - and her lying in her favorite pouncing place on the bed and me tossing a mouse for her to catch in mid-air. We started off doing that in the bed when she was tiny so she wouldnt hurt herself which is a good thing since she does it quite spectacularly now that shes bigger. She hurls herself quite death-defyingly like a suicidal soccer goalkeeper or stuntman slash tennis player. Somersaults, doublehand smashes, the lot. Both these games involve more physical exertion on my part than on hers which bemuses me. How did it end up that way? I have to run around sweating like a pig retrieving the mouse and throwing it while she cooly lies in the bed looking on with big excited eyes until Im exhausted. Well, thats easy for her to say, she does all the fun stuff.

I have to throw the mouse pretty hard and high else she just lies there staring at me with an expression that tells me she's far from impressed. Sometimes it takes 3-4 throws before I get it exciting enough for her, all the time under her almost scornful gaze - In fact, sometimes, she almost looks like she thinks Im...stupid...nah, couldnt be...could it?

Yep. Unless your cat is very exceptional, she doesn't realize we furless are much weaker for our size than a cat. Try explaining this to her.

Re: My cat thinks Im stupid

ZOMG, you had me laughing so hard! *wipes tears from the corners of my eyes*
Yes, how is it that 'exercising the kitty' works US out even more? Tee-hee-hee! Louie LOVES to leap/catch small stuffed toys from the air, but he doesn't fetch, and you're right: unless it is thrown just so, he won't even consider making any effort. He'll just watch it go right over and then look at me like: "well, what did you do it like that for?"
First, I think you need more small toys to throw, instead of throwing/retrieving only one.
Next, some new toys. I taped a single feather to the end of a leather shoelace and that one feather makes the end of that leather thong "fly" irresistably and the kitties love to try to catch it. Another toy they like, though it can be a challenge keeping it in the air with 8 cats watching intently, is the fleece-ribbon-wand called Cat Charmer.
You *may* also want to consider tying a long/light leather thong to one of the soft throwing-toys, as a retrieval line.
Good luck!
h =^..^=

My cats don't think that I am stupid, they KNOW that I am

Re: My cat thinks Im stupid

Oh, I have an array of different sized and colored mice, mice on ribbons, mice on string, feathers on elastic string, etc, aluminium foil balls, ping pong balls etc...Laser worked for a while, it still intrigues her but shes given up trying to catch it, she just sits there doing the bird-in-the-window-ka-ka-ka thing at it (which sound I am now convinced isnt simulating chewing or anything like that, but some sort of excited frustration). She fetches until she sees that Im up and playing with her, then leaves that up to me...Oh well, I guess she just thinks I need the work out more than she does. Bloody cat...

Re: My cat thinks Im stupid

This is exactly why I braided about fifteen feet of yarn into a rope that I tied around one of Fergie's favorite toys. I got so tired of throwing it for her, only to have her chase it down, sniff it, then trot back to me and meow for more! With the yarn rope, I can throw it and retrieve it from the same spot, plus it drives her nuts to have her toy suddenly jump out from under her!

However, a word of warning: If you do try for some type of rope like this, it must be a supervised toy that is ONLY out when you are playing with it. Hubby and I went to bed at different times one night a few weeks after I made the rope, and we each thought the other put the toy and rope away. Neither of us actually did, and the eight inches of yarn rope Fergie swallowed had to be surgically removed a couple of days later.

You mean you're supposed to throw things?? I've been flinging things around, but this throwing things is another good idea.
