A "pet food" pantry?

I saw in one community here in Ohio that they have such a thing and often give out free food for people who can't feed their pets in this economy. What an awesome idea!! I mean wow - I am almost inspired to try and start one in my little area. Think about it: Write to pet food manufacturers for donations, even odd labeled bags or dented cans? Contact Wal-Mart and grocery stores for the same or even ripped bags or whatever?

What do you think?

Re: A "pet food" pantry?

A friend of mine just procured 3 1/2 tons of cat food, dog food, canned food, and litter for all the rescues and TNR groups in our area. They are giving out 250lbs at a time. They gave us 500lbs this last week. It was like Christmas!

Our 500 lbs will be gone in two weeks. We even took some dog food for the people who watch and feed the colonies. A few of them are really hit hard by the economy and are struggling. We supply all the food for the colonies.

I think that is a great idea to start a pantry. I know meals on wheels supplies dog/cat food also in some areas because people were saving part of their meals for their pets cuz they were so strapped and couldn't afford cat/dog food.
