Did I Do Something Wrong?

So, Skooma had a groomer's appointment today which went very well. When I was booking it I said I only wanted a de-matting and a potty patch. So, the night before the appointment I clipped all of her nails just in case she went Genghis Kitty on them.

Well, I mentioned this to the groomer, along with a warning that she may be touchy about her armpit/butt, and the groomer was all like 'ORLY?' and said that's usually the first thing they do. But I'm pretty sure they charge for clipping nails and I didn't want to pay for something I can do just as easily at home. And yet I can't help but feel I did something wrong... I know you're not supposed to clip nails before a neuter/spay because they do them when they're under and free of charge. But she wasn't going under and I think it wasn't free... I also wanted to minimize her trauma.

What does everyone else think?

What the heck does ORLY mean? I have no idea what the issue is here.

There's nothing wrong w/ clipping the nails yourself -- I would do it in that situation b/c I prefer that others do as little as possible w/ my cats (given that most people mishandle cats). It should be up to you.

Re: Did I Do Something Wrong?

ORLY is an internet text-talk for 'Oh Really?' but it described how she sounded so well I felt compelled to use it. The issue was that she sounded all offended that I had clipped Skooma's nails. And when she mentioned it's the first thing they do I could only think 'but I didn't want them done'.

That's what I figured too. It's good to know I didn't make some huge mistake and insult the groomer or anything... Social Anxiety I have plenty...

Re: Did I Do Something Wrong?

With my groomer, it's a package deal. Nail trimming is included and is usually the first thing they do. So you might not have saved yourself any money, but I'm sure the groomer wasn't insulted, probably just surprised.

You didn't do anything wrong.

Maybe she thought you were trying to be stingy and reduce the price?

Re: Did I Do Something Wrong?

Any grooming places I know include nail trimming in the price but I don't see any reason why you cant do it yourself or why a groomer would be the least bit miffed if you did.
Glad you explained ORLY. I had absolutely no idea what it meant either!

I think she is your cat and you can do anything you want to do. Your clipping her nails:
... was to benefit your cat so she wouldn't have to be man-handled to have that done at the groomer's.
... was to be pro-active for the groomer's safety if she did get swipe-y with her claws.
... was to keep costs down because you do NOT need to pay for a service you can/did do at home.

I'd have ORLY'd her right back! ... ORLY! You mean clip nails even if the client does not *want* you to do that to their cat? Hm. That is interesting and I'll keep that in mind with future appointments.

Re: Did I Do Something Wrong?

This page for the grooming place (http://www.ospikapet.com/cat.htm) says they charge $5.00 for 'Nails Only' and I paid $10.00 for... I guess it would be 'DeMatt Fee' and probably includes the potty patch. She had three mats, two which were shaved off and one under her armpit that brushed out. So, I believe they do charge for nails... (ignore the 'we do not have a cat groomer' as they don't update the site very often and she started in July)

I'm too used to internet-savvy young people apparently... then again, it was an ooold meme and not very many people use 'ORLY' anymore... *sigh* now I feel old.

@Heidi: That's exactly what I figured. I knew Skooma was okay at the vets but in a groomers surrounded by dogs and loud noises? I didn't know if she would freak out or not. When I was booking the appointment a lady came in with her huuuge fluffy male cat and asked the lady if she could get his nails done. Of course, kitty was hissing and growling and trying to swipe. The goomer kept telling the lady to 'hold his scruff' 'watch the claws!' 'he's gonna bite' because, frankly, the lady had nooo idea what she was doing and had obviously never restrained a cat before. I wanted to prevent further injury because, heck, if I was a groomer I'd appreciate it.

I'll probably end up either getting another groomer (this is my first one and there's plenty of fish in the sea) or specifying exactly what I want done and saying there's nothing else. I'm a little too spineless for a smart reply but I'll work on it...

Re: Did I Do Something Wrong?

You didn't do anything wrong, its perfectly fine
I work for a pet store chain, and they sell loads of equipment for clipping nails/grooming etc, so it's sensible to do it at home really, I'm sure your kitty would prefer you doing it anyway
