Cat Litter Toxic...

I'm waiting to hear the full report on the evening news but I keep hearing that cat litter could be toxic to us, especially women. Can't wait to hear the full report later. Geez, what would we do if we can't use litter???

Love it, Mow Mow!

Are you sure it is the litter and not the actual cat droppings? There have been simialr warings about cats and sheep in that respect as far as pregnant women are concerned for a long time.

I heard them say cat litter, not their droppings. Listen to your local newscast tonight.

They're talking about the parasite Toxoplasma Gondii. Many people are infected already. Do a search for more information. Observing basic hygene rules is what is called for. It can also come from handling raw meat. This is probably why you rarely hear about Steak Tartare anymore. This was raw ground lean beef whipped with cream and eaten raw.

I'm in the wrong country to have heard it on the news. What did they say in the end? Was it Toxoplasma Gondii? If it was then really it's not a new discovery.

They were specifically talking about research which showed infection with toxoplasma gondii may increase with the risk for attempting suicide in women. They did not show any specific link just something that they will look at more closely. I believe they were using data from medical records in Denmark.

As Jusjim said-good hand washing and hygiene is important when handling litter, or cat waste in general. Pregnant women should avoid cleaning the cat boxes, if possible.

Thanks for the info, they did not mention anything about this on the newscast last night. Looks like this is nothing new.

MSNBC had an article about the suicide thing, it was about toxoplasmosis as well.
