What is this!

When I went into my yard today, I found this. It was pretty big, maybe the size of 3/4 volleyball with a few pieces scattered around it. It looks like it has what could be feathers in it but not really what I see from bird feathers. It would have had to be a big bird! What do you think?

Birds steal the horses' hair at this time of the year but this is way out of their league.

Our old farm cat used to climb up and knock the nests down (and ate the babies of course).... so it might be something similar. I did a google image search on bird's nests and some looked fluffly like that (as compared to plain old sticks and twigs).
