Give her time. She may not feel comfortable doing that yet. Encourage small displays of affection: a scratch behind the ears, belly rub, whatever. In time she may become more of an affectionate cat, but not all cats want to or will ever be lap cats. We've had Beeper since she was a stray 14 years ago, and she is a very sweet and loving cat, but she has never sat on our laps.

That's right; not all cats like to sit on laps but doesn't mean she isn't bonded to you..Madam is the first cat I've had that wouldn't sit on my lap_now that I know about I don't insist on her doing it; she's very affectionate in other ways.
Another thing; I think sometimes they feel too hot or uncorfotable(sp) Back to my cat's example she does laps in cold weather; others I've had had were all-season lappers

how to get cat to sit on lap

We adopted Jimmy nearly a year ago (aged 4) - and he still doesn't sit on laps
However, I agree with everyone else that said they can show affection i other ways. Jimmy never liked visitors either, but yesterday we had a friend over and he came in and did a right little performance.
Chased his toys, rolled on his back, sniffed my friend's feet with great interest - even allowed her to scratch his head. He clearly was enjoying the company But he just doesn't want cuddles.
