Our 2 year-old cat doesn't like our 3 month old kittens.

What can we do to get them all to get along? The kittens are very loving and would quickly accept the older cat, however the older cat doesn't like them and often hisses at them.

The older cat is a bit fearful (we found her outside, but she was already fixed so she is not a true feral cat), and probably also jealous of the kittens. Any advice on getting her to like them would be greatly appreciated.

Kittens can be really offensive to older cats...they're just little bundles of energy and playfulness, and they haven't quite mastered the art of respecting other cats' personal space. Plus, your cat has had an established territory, and now there are interlopers (the kittens), so some upset is to be expected on her part.

If you haven't already, now would be the time to try cat-to-cat introductions by separating them, swapping scents, and working up to protected visual contact over a period of days or weeks. Try looking in the free article library at www.littlebigcat.com for more in-depth info on doing introductions between cats.

If your older cat is a female and your kittens are male, that can spell trouble because their energic play habits may be too much for the older cat to handle.

In any case, give your old cat plenty of attention. Try a proper cat intro. And don't hesitate to give your old cat plenty of love while the kittens are around. If the old cat only gets attention when the kitties aren't around, she will reinforce the feeling that the kittens have taken away her space and her more valuable "posession" - you.
