Adoption Blues

Getting depressed at how poorly my newspaper ad did for finding the kittens homes. I ran it for three days -- including the big Saturday edition -- and received only three or four phone calls, none of which panned out. So far, I have two definite homes (both leads came from petfinder.com), one who was supposed to call yesterday about visiting one today (although she emailed me everyday last week, which is why I can't understand why she didn't call -- also a lead from petfinder), and two that are still up in the air.

I guess I'm the kind of person who needs things to happen immediately in order to feel secure about the situation. And I have no patience...

How do you breeders/foster families do it without getting discouraged?

Patience takes practice....and you're getting it now. We can't always pick and choose the time. Stick with it...it'll work out OK.

Let me tell you, it is hard

I had to turn one lady down last week because she just wanted my cat to scare her neighbors cats off the property. I had to turn down a really good home for my de-clawed foster cat becuase the lady would be gone 12 hours a day...and even though it was a good home, my little de-claw foster gal is so sweet and would go nuts if she were alone that long.

Good Luck

Well, the day ended on a little brighter note -- the person who was supposed to call yesterday came over today, and she and her son picked out the cat they liked, AND another person contacted me through petfinder about a different kitten, so if that works out, I will have homes for four of the five. Also my mom is a hospice nurse, and she is going to check with some of the nursing homes she visits to see if any would be willing to take in the mother cat as a resident cat. I'm feeling better -- thanks everyone.

I would give it a little time. I usually don't get a chance to look at the newspaper until it is a couple of days old Have you tried putting up flyers at a pet store or vets office?

Well i am no foster or anything like that but the thing is is it takes patience and you need to look at it this way you get to be with the animal longer and spend more fun rememarable times together.Becuase when they leave i can telly ou it is hard so just cherish the time you and the animal has together while it lasts becuase not all animals are the same every cat is different in its own way.

Definately wait for someone who wants a cat to contact you. I've seen so many people with a box of kittens outside of walmart it makes me sick. Although you'll find a few well meaning people, most will say "oh look at how cute!" and take home a kitten when they really aren't prepared or informed enough to give it a good home.

Pet stores might be better since the people going in them most likely HAVE pets or are looking for them... but still. Wait until someone contacts you. Flyers can help a ton, but I wouldn't put pictures (it adds to the cute factor without thinking much about it first).

Have you tried local vets? We always have flyers for homeless animals (even though we have enough of our own to help first ).

I'm not going to stand outside the store or anything -- I rescued this kitty from the cold, and I want to make sure they have the best homes possible. I've been trying to screen people and meet them before I decide whether or not they will go to that home, which is probably why I feel frustrated. And I forgot about the vet's office -- I have to take mama kitty to the vet on Friday, so I will make a flyer to post when I go.
