When to get new Mom and her kitten fixed?

We didn't get our cat fixed as quick as we had hoped and she got out and ended up pregnant.

Luckily she only ended up having one kitten. (We were only going to keep one, so I didn't have to deal with having to whine when it was time for the others to go.)

But we want to get these two fixed as soon as possible.

I know the (male) kitten should be about six months old. I've heard of it being done earlier, but that worries me a little.
Anyone have any advice about that?

And when should we wait to get the Mom fixed? I know to wait at least until kitten is done nursing ... But is there any length of time after that I should wait?

Thanks!

My vet will alter pets when they reach 5 pounds.

There are lots of different opinions about this. Some reputable breeders support early speutering, and some say to definitely wait until 6 months. I think I'd go middle of the road and get them done at 4 months as long as they are a healthy weight. It's a lot easier on a male kitty than a female, so I wouldn't worry about it as much with him. As for your girl kitty, just make sure she doesn't get out again if you wait. Call your vet and ask what they recommend.

My mummy cat was speyed when her kittens were 5 weeks old, as she was experiencing a very long and uncomfortable season. She came back into heat when they were 2 weeks old, so watch out for escape tricks. I would get your little boy done after 4 months.

Haha! I stole it from someone on the ragamuffin board! (she said I could) So much easier than typing it all out, plus it's cute!
