Help for a friend

Looking for some advice here guys. My friend has two cats and one of them was really late in coming back in today so she was quite upset. The cat Candy seems exhausted and her claws are pretty wrecked, front and back. My friend seems to think it was a dog that chased Candy. Any ideas what would damage her claws and more importantly what can we do to make the cat more comfortbale.

Cats usually get the claws damaged when they get hit by a car, they tend to "dig" their claws into the ground/road and this damages them, it is one of the first things a vet will check if they suspect a cat has been hit by a car.

I would call out the vet immediately and get the cat checked over.

She says they are not bleeding just shredded. I wondered about being hit by a car but she lives in a really quiet rural area, mainly surrounded by woods. If a cat was scared up a tree would it damage its claws trying to get down?

I doubt a cat would shred it's claws by going down a tree, one of my cats climbs trees alot and his claws are fine.

If the claws are blunt at the ends or damaged (not bleeding) then I would still think a car accident is likely.

I live in a very quiet village and my cat still managed to get hit by a car he did survive though

If it is a car accident, there could be some internal bleeding, so he probably needs to be checked out. I hope he's okay!
