Kitty with Hacking Cough

Does anyone have any ideas of any diseases in Cats that cause a hacking cough. We adopted our 1yr old kitty two weeks ago from the humane society. She has been hacking like she's coughing up a hairball but nothing comes up. She just completed antibiotics and Torbutrol (narcotic) for cough on Sat. This morning (Tues) she starts the hacking/sneezing cough all over but nothing comes up. No runny nose or eyes and she's acting fine. The vet put her on more narcotic cough pills today. I am just dumbfounded as to what can be wrong with her and we can't exactly afford to keep her at the vet every week? This is one reason we adopted a "healthy" cat with all it's shots instead of a free stray. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Its pretty common for cats to come from shelters with a bit of a bug, mostly upper respiratory problems. It shouldn't be too serious and hopefully will be resolved soon. Has the vet given you a diagnosis? I'm not really big on vets who give out medications... just to try... without trying to specifically find the source of the problem.
