My dad and Muffins - a breakthrough!!!!

So as I've stated in some other posts, my parents took care of Muffins for 2 weeks while I was away. They haven't had pets since they were kids (besides a bird and a hampster I had when I was little). Anyway, my dad has HATED cats his whole entire life. I mean HATES them! He attributes it to "traumatic" experiences of his childhood when he was 7 years old. There was a neighbor who had a cat, and he would watch it kill baby birds and eggs in the yard. Since then, he has been bitter towards them.

He reluctantly agreed to take in Muffins with my mom, but assured me that he wouldn't end up *gasp* liking her or get attached to her in any way. He made joking references to me not getting her back alive! Muffins is just too cute and funny and energetic and crazy and funloving for him not to like her. (She is very dog-like). My dad doesn't hate all animals. He LOVES observing animals and how they act, like birds, and deer, and dogs, etc. I just knew he would have a ball with her.

So..... it turns out that Muffins and my dad hit it off so well! They became buds! My mom was jealous of my dad because Muffins would follow my dad around more than he would follow her. My dad would play with her and "observe" her in play (what he so loves to do). He would leave the bathroom door cracked so she could come in and lay on the side of the tub while he was in the shower. He would wipe off the mirror in the bathroom for her when it would fog over when she lays in front of it. My mom told me that he would ask, "where did the DOG go?" And...... on the last couple nights they had her, he talked my mom into keeping their bedroom door open so she could sleep with them if she wanted. HOW CUTE!!!!

I talked to my mom last night and she said she missed Muffins SO MUCH! She seemed upset about it. She said that my dad has been missing her too. I am so happy that my dad has taken one or two steps in the right direction. Muffins served as some therapy for my dad! Hmm, now I'll have to work on talking them into getting a cat for themselves. That might take a little more time though.

That's so great to hear!! One more strike against the stereotype of men not liking cats.

Yea, I was excited about it as you can tell. It was funny because when I would talk to my mom about her on the phone while I was away, she would have to whisper the stories to me so my dad couldn't hear - she didn't want to make a big deal about it in front of my dad.

I know! One night in the middle of the night, I will find Muffins missing only to find out that my parents have snatched her away from me. Well, considering they are 2 hours away, I highly doubt that will happen.
