Sophie scared me to death!!!! Anyone else have this happen?

Sophie scared me to death yesterday, I spent the night with a friend that needed some help, and came home to find her missing! I was terrified, she's 8 years old, has no front claws, and has never been outside before-and the doggy door had been left unlocked!!! She'd never left my bedroom before so I couldn't figure out where she had gone and feared the worst, especially after I spent 7 hours tearing the house apart, giving fliers to all the neighbors and seeing no sign of my princess!!! I talked a friend of mine into taking my dog for a couple of days so the dog wouldn't scare Sophie if she came into the back yard. I was just about ready to give up for the night and start again the next morning when I decided to try it one more time. I locked the other cats(my roomates have 2 cats also) in the basement and went upstairs to call her-nothing. I went back downstairs and let the other cats go up stairs and started calling her-To my suprise, she actually came!!! She had been in the house the whole time, something must have spooked her and she had hidden good! Once the dog was gone for a while, she had nothing to be afraid of and came out of hiding! That was at 11:20 last night, by that point it had been over 24 hours since I had last seen her-you can imagine my relief to find her safe and sound!!! She wouldn't let me out of her sight last night, she slept as close to me as she could get, I was so happy to have my princess safe and sound!!!!! Anyone else ever have this happen?

Probably everybody that has a cat - sooner or later the cat discovers a hiding place unknown to their human friends. Now that you know, she'll have to find another. Next time this happens, just get out the cat food as if you were fixing her favorite meal, and make plenty of noise doing it.

when I first adopted my kittens I couldn't find them one night. Went BERSERK, tearing the house apart, looking for them in a panic.

PS: they were small enough at the time to crawl UNDER the bedroom dresser! that's where they were!

How awful a feeling when you think they are missing

I agree. I think we've all experienced that to some extent. In the first week I had Barnaby I was so worried one day when I couldn't find him. Turns out he crawled under the desk and climbed up the back side of the drawers and made a "nest" in the top drawer. It was so cute but before I could get a picture of him in there he was too big to fit anymore.

I tried the cat food trick, didn't work, I tried calling her, didn't work-I tried everything she's ever came to and nothing worked. What I think happened is that she couldn't figure out how to get back down from the ceiling for a while, and she eventually figured it out.

For now I keep the door to my bathroom closed until I can get that fixed so the cats can't get up there anymore!!!!! There's very little to hide in/under/behind in my apartment, so I was almost sure she had gotten out! At least she was safe and sound the whole time, that's what really matters

Oh my gosh. I wonder what spooked her. Glad that you found her though.

I know what spooked her, my roomates are kind of party animals and I bet they got noisy, and when Sophie couldn't find me to snuggle with(that's usually what she does when she gets uneasy about something), she went and found somewhere to hide.
