Sometimes I browse the newspaper on the internet, but I'm not a subscriber so I can't read all the articles. But I came across this today:
Pollen from lilies kills Siamese cat
LONDON -- An warning has been issued to pet owners after pollen from stargazer lilies bought in a supermarket killed John Harntett's Siamese cat Catalin.
Probably it's news that pollen killed the cat. I didn't read the article, but it must be an extraordinary occurence. Generally it takes eating the leaves of the plant.
It's good that you posted this. I'm surprised to hear about the pollen also, but there are members who didn't know that lilies were toxic to cats. I'm glad you posted it!
The toxicity of lilies varies considerably from one variety to another. I used to have a Peace Lilly (until one of my cats knocked it over :?) , and I caught them nibbling on the leaves every now and then without any adverse effects. It IS something I tried to prevent, but hey....you know how it is with cats!!
Des, pollen is the fine, dusty material that appears on the top of the bloom. It's the part bees carry on their feet from flower to flower and fertilize them. Sometimes the wind carries it, and then the pollen count becomes high.
