kitty massage?

What is my cat doing when she pushes her paws into my back or stomache when I am laying down before she lays down? Giving me a massage? (That is what it feels like)

garfield,

It's called 'kneading'... it's a hold-over from before she was weaned.

Newborn kittens knead their mother's abdomen when they're nursing.

Lookie here!

Yeah, I guess. I just don't get it. I don't nurse her. Neither do my blankets or pillows.

In domestication, adult cats (and dogs), tend to retain some of their juvenile behaviors. It's purrrrfectly normal. Enjoy it.

WHAT?

Listen, we're cat-lovers around here, and we do anything our cats desire, and that includes...

... Uh... sorry... ahem... got a little carried away there for a sec...

Aimee, your cat isn't expecting any milk to start flowing from your pillows... or other parts...

She's just getting comfortable... cat-style...

You (and the blankets and pillows) should take it as a compliment!

It means she trusts you!

Cats sometimes treat us as if we were their kittens---they bring us mice for lunch (I'm serious!), they bathe us, and play with us. At other times they treat us like their mother cat. Kneading was associated with the first pleasurable experience they ever had, so, if we have a reasonably soft spot, they'll knead us and purr. I think it's great!
