Mother's instinct would be my opinion. Can't imagine one of my 3 girlies being trusted to complete strangers at all. Some cruel heart, even in a otherwise good company could mistreat them in various ways, no way. I don't even think I trust most of my family just to come over to feed them. Good luck, hope you can find a way that you can have confidence in.

I'm not entirely clear. So, you want to ship the cat alone?

Is there a way that you could postpone transporting the cat until either your mom or you fly to visit the other? That way you could just fly the cat in a carrier with you? That would be my first option.
If that wasn't an option, I'd look into one of the BONDED companies that specialize in pet transporting.
Here is one site that I've heard good things about (although I have no experience with them myself)

We've had two adult cats and two puppies air shipped to us - each individually at different times...I made the arrangements for three of them.

After 9-11, many airlines no longer accept live animals as accompanied in-cabin carry-on (under the seat) or unaccompanied cargo; some still do:

American Airlines Cargo Shipping Animals
America West Pets in Passenger Cabin (only; no cargo options)
Continental Airlines Animal Policy
Delta Pet Travel Options
Northwest Airlines Priority Pet
Northwest Airlines Unaccompanied Live Animal Shipping
