Hissing?

I have a young feral I have been feeding whenever she visits. My question is I have noticed she opens her mouth at me when I first spot her but I dont hear anything. I dont know if she is hissing at me or meowing. Or is this somthing else she is doing like a greeting?

Some cats do a silent meow. Most don't ALWAYS do it, but it is typical.

I had heard somewhere (don't know how true it is) that a lot of true feral cats do not know how to meow, that a cat meow's to get a person's attention. Since feral cats don't get much human attention, there is no need for them to meow. It could be that your feral kitty is trying to get your attention, especially if he/she is not showing aggression towards you or running away and hiding.

The cat might be smelling you. Cats have a smell receptor in thier mouth.

Could be either of the above-mentioned. Hard to tell without actually seeing it. But it's definitely not hissing....you will know without a doubt when a cat is hissing!!

At first she did it to me when i was next to her but now that she knows me more she only does it when I walk into my yard we first see eachother. Could this also mean shes hungry? What are signs that she is begining to trust me more?

If she'll come close to you, she's starting to trust you.

Great! She did come close to me when I fed her the other day but she was still nervous and ran to the bush back after she finished and just stood there watching. Hopefully she will get more confident about me being near her.
