A Friend For My Kitten

Hi Everyone,
I've been reading this site for a while and find it very good for a new kitty owner like myself. Okay i have one neutred male 6 month old kitten he has never been outside and i'm wondering about getting him a friend . Would he accept a female or male better? or does it not make a difference? many thanks

Hi Ebony,

I think that since your kitty is young that It would be a good idea to get a companion cat right now. Sometimes when you try to do that with older cats they will not accept the other cat. I dont think that it matters what gender the cat is (though I could be wrong). Just remember to take your time introducing them

Marcellus was 6 months when we got Wallace. He was thrilled to have a playmate. This is a very good time agewise. And I totally agree that if you are serious about another cat, now is the time as it often gets harder as they get older, especially if the first cat has been an only cat. I would get a cat that is close in age though, that should make things easier. I would also read the information on introductions and take it slowly, at least at first. I don't think it makes too much of a difference whether you get a male or female. There are opinions on both. Some people say that neutered male cats are a little more laid back and less territorial and on a personal level I could say that as I have 4 males and introductions have never been a problem and they all get along. But I haven't had a female since I was young either so I really can't speak informatively about that. I have found that my friends females had a harder time accepting new cats but they were older too so that could have been due more to their age rather than the fact they were females. Let us know if you decide to get another cat....how fun!

Agreed!

I'm a firm believer in a multi-cat household, I think it's a great job to get him a friend.

I agree too! And I don't think it matters whether it's a male or female. I've also always had males and they've all gotten along fine.
Good luck!

Same here....four is the perfect number (also the legal limit of most cities) but I got five.

We have neutered males all around. We have never had a problem with introductions - only a few hisses on the first few days. I've never owned a female kitty though, so I don't know how they typically are with other cats. Typically though, sex doesn't matter as long as they're neutered/spayed.

I would definitely get him a friend though!! Two cats are so much more fun!

Thanks Everyone!

Hey everyone thanks for all your replys they were all very useful. I got myself a young black female (she's a cutie!) I've had her 1 day and my 6 month old boy has been a bit hissy, but it all seems normal so far. They are kept in diffrent rooms but they know of each others presence. I could be back for more advice soon, lol. But I think all will be good in time. Anyway just keeping you up to date. Thanks once again everyone!

Ebony.

P.s. I'll let you all know how everything is in about a weeks time!
