Hootie back home after 6 days, Poki's behaviour interesting

I'm not surprised or concerned at this but curious. As posted in cat chat, our 11 yr old kitty "Hootie" slipped out while we were away and after 6 days missing, came home on Thanksgiving morning.

Our other cat, Poki, started acting different while we were desperately searching for Hootie. For example, Poki pretty much stays upstairs. She comes down when she feels like it but is upstairs 90% of the time. With Hootie gone, she was downstairs often, and usually sitting in the window sill. I truly believe she was wondering where Hootie was.

Now that Hootie is back, Poki has been walking up to her, sniffing a bit and then giving a mild hiss and lifting a paw to give Hootie a smack on the head. Hootie has always been the mildly dominant cat so this is interesting.

Is it because Poki smells something on Hootie from when Hootie was out? Maybe other animals?

Poki might be saying, "This is your home, Hootie, don't run away. I worry when you're away i and don't like the strange smells on you when you return."

I'm so happy that Hootie found his way home...what a Thanksgiving gift!

It probably is because Hootie smells different. You can take a towel, rub it on Poki, then on Hootie and back on Poki to intermingle their scents. Also putting a drop on vanilla on the back each of their necks will get them smelling the same. I'd do both....

Then again Poki may be saying "what were you thinking? you yahoo!" whack!

I've noticed also that a subordinate cat's behavior changes when a dominant cat isn't around. Sort of a loosing of inhibitions.
