why does my cat put toys in his food and water?

My 5-month old cat always puts his play toys in his food and water bowl. He even has this long ribbon that he puts in there as well. I am always taking stuff out of his bowls and can't keep up with him. I've had cats all my life and never seen this type of behavior. Any explanation for this?

It's fun!!
I've had several cats do that but they did grow out of it.
Be careful of those ribbons though. They can be dangerous if he has a tendency to try to eat them.

Yup...fun it is. Holly (who is 6 mos) doesn't put toys in her food because nuttin', but nuttin' gets between her and her food. But the water fountain is a regular recipient of toys getting dunked in...

When Maggie was a kitten she would drop them down the garbage disposal. A couple ground up furry mice and plastic balls later, I finally started putting the plug in it when the sink wasn't in use.
