Kitten suckleing on other kitten

Hello all,

My veterinary hospital does all the pre adoption spays/neuters and exams for our county animal shelter. Today we had two three kitties come in that were between 5 and 6 weeks old.(No, we didn't spay/neuter them) Two of them were going to the same home and I had them in the same cage together. The little girl spent ALL day suckling on the little boys belly. His belly was soaking well with a little irritation on the skin by the end of the day. I understand this is part of being separated from mom WAY too early, but I didn't know what to tell the new owners as far as keeping the little girl from suckeling on her brother. I told her I would do some research and call her.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

One of the other foster kitties in the same house as Cali and Charlee was put there because the other kitties were sucking on his stomach, too. Their foster mom said she thought it was from not having a mom....

When I first rescued the kittens at four weeks old, they all more or less sucked on each other's... genitals

I had to separate them countless times a day, because the genital area would be soaking wet and red and irritated, and I was afraid it might impact and cause serious trouble. They did it consistantly for a good two weeks - Waldo and Wicket being the worst - and then it gradually faded away.

I know you are supposed to keep them apart when they do that, but it's not always feasible. And even when it is, you don't always want to have a poor lonely kitten crying its heart out because he wants to be with his brothers and sisters... so I don't know, I would say if they suck only on the belly it's not too bad - just keep an eye on it and stop them from doing it when you are around and can push the suckling kitty away from the "target". Maybe Julie would know more about this.

Maybe cut off a sock and put it on the boy's body until the girl is broken of the habit. Can't be any more uncomfortable for him than having her suckle on him all day long.

Thanks, I will pass that tip along to their new owners.
